Your credit report is one of the most important documents in your financial life. Think of it as your financial CV; it’s what lenders look at to get a sense of your track record as a borrower. But what information does it actually contain, and what parts do lenders pay the most attention to?

This guide will provide a clear explanation of your credit history, demystifying what lenders see and showing you how to ensure your report is both accurate and strong.

What Is a Credit Report?

A credit report is a detailed record of your history of managing debt and credit. It is compiled by Credit Reference Agencies (CRAs) in the UK and is used by lenders to assess the risk of lending to you. In short, it helps them predict how likely you are to pay back money you borrow.

Your report contains your personal details, a list of your credit accounts, and your repayment patterns over the last six years. The credit report information is then used to generate your credit score.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I check my credit report?

It is good practice to check your report with all three agencies at least once a year. You should also check it more frequently if you are actively trying to improve your score or are planning a major application, such as a mortgage, to ensure all information is up to date and correct.

Does checking my own credit report lower my score?

No. When you check your own report, it is recorded as a "soft search." This type of search is invisible to lenders and has no impact on your credit score. A "hard search," which can temporarily affect your score, only occurs when you formally apply for credit with a lender.

Can I remove old debts from my report?

In the UK, most financial information remains on your report for six years from the date the account was settled or defaulted. After this six-year period, the information is automatically removed. Typically, you cannot have legitimate, accurate information removed from your file before this time has passed.
